What the title checker looks at
Google does not cut titles by characters but by width. On desktop there are roughly 580 pixels. A title with many wide letters like M and W gets cut earlier than one with many narrow letters. The checker measures the width in the font Google uses for titles and shows the result as an estimate.
It also checks points that are known to help. The main keyword should come as early as possible. A number makes it concrete what the post delivers. A strong word such as checklist, mistakes or guide shows the benefit. The score sums it all up, but the single tips matter more.
How to use the result
Write two or three versions and compare the scores. Then read the title out loud. Does it sound like something you would click yourself? A title with 100 points that sounds like an advert does less than one with 80 points that answers a real question.
If your WordPress adds the company name automatically, count it in. Just type it into the field as well.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an SEO title be?
As a rule of thumb, 50 to 60 characters. What really counts is the width of about 580 pixels on desktop. Beyond that Google shortens the title with three dots.
Is the post heading the same as the title in Google?
Not necessarily. The heading in the post can be longer. The SEO title is the text Google shows in the results, and you set it in WordPress or your SEO plugin.
Does Google always use my title?
No. Google sometimes rewrites titles, for example when they are very long or do not match the content. A clear, honest title of the right length is usually kept.
